InvoiceRocket vs Refrens
An honest head-to-head for Indian freelance developers — covering foreign-client invoicing, UPI QR in PDFs, AI receipt scanning, CA access and where Refrens is genuinely the better pick.
Frequently asked questions
- Is InvoiceRocket cheaper than Refrens?
- InvoiceRocket is free for individuals invoicing under ₹15 lakhs/year, with no cap on invoice volume in that range. Refrens' free plan is capped at a fixed number of documents per year and locks features like e-invoicing and GST returns assistance behind paid tiers. For a typical solo freelance developer, InvoiceRocket is materially cheaper.
- Can I migrate my customers and invoices from Refrens?
- Yes. Export your customer list and invoice list as CSV from Refrens, then import them into InvoiceRocket via the bulk import flow. PDFs of past invoices can be uploaded to each customer's documents tab so your CA still has a single source of truth.
- Does InvoiceRocket support e-invoicing (IRN/QR)?
- E-invoicing is required only for businesses above the ₹5 crore aggregate turnover threshold, which almost no individual freelance developer hits. Refrens supports IRN generation on paid plans. InvoiceRocket does not currently generate IRNs — if you cross the threshold, this is the one row where Refrens wins.
- Why does InvoiceRocket emphasise foreign-client invoicing?
- Most Indian freelance developers earn primarily from US and EU clients. That means LUT-based zero-GST exports, FX gain/loss tracking against booked INR equivalents, FIRC tracking, and DTAA-aware invoice notes — workflows that general SMB tools like Refrens treat as edge cases but InvoiceRocket treats as the default.
- Can my CA access InvoiceRocket?
- Yes. You can invite a CA with read-only access — they can view invoices, payments, expenses, ledgers, GSTR-1/3B exports and the year-end P&L without being able to edit anything.
- What about lead management and the Refrens network?
- Refrens has a B2B network and lead exchange — genuinely useful if it's part of how you find work. InvoiceRocket has no equivalent and is unlikely to add one. If lead generation is core to your workflow, Refrens is a better fit; if it isn't, the network features are noise.
